Politicians, senior government functionaries and former Jihadi leaders who attended a ceremony on seventh death anniversary of ex-chief of the High Peace Council Burhanuddin Rabbani called for fair and transparent legislative elections.

The participants spoke about the country’s political and security situation and issues pertaining elections, underlining the importance of unity, harmony and cooperation in Afghanistan to tackle the ongoing crises.

The speakers at the event spoke on Rabbani’s peace ambitions and cited that he played a key role in peaceful transition of power in the country after topple of the Taliban regime in 2001.

Former president and former head of the High Peace Council, Burhanuddin Rabbani, was assassinated in a suicide bombing at his house in Kabul in 2011.

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah addressing the event commended the public forces and Afghan security forces for ensuring security during Ashura rituals in Kabul on Thursday. “It is a clear example of people’s cooperation in the country’s security,” he said.

CEO Abdullah commended Rabbani’s role in peaceful transition of power in Afghanistan said that he had dedicated his life for peace.

Abdullah also ensured the nation that the government is committed to ensuring transparency in elections. He pointed out to an agreement on use of biometric system in elections, saying that it is a key issue and that the election commission’s announcement in this regard will overcome the concerns by the people and political parties.

Acting Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani spoke on the occasion and said the political parties will continue with their demands for a change in election system to guarantee transparency in elections.

Second deputy chief of executive Mohammad Mohaqiq said it is good news that government has agreed on use of biometric system in elections, adding that if this happens, Afghanistan will have transparent polls.

Meanwhile, Head of Hizb-e-Islami Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal stressed the need for unity among Afghans and said he trusts in the new generation’s commitment and energy to build Afghanistan.

Arghandiwal called on politicians to overcome rifts and “collectively” work for moving the country towards a better future.

Burhannudin Rabbani was the leader of Jamiat Islami Afghanistan and the head of the High Peace Council before his death. He took a strong stance against terrorism.
