AT-KABUL: The High Peace Council says that Taliban’s agreement to join the peace talks would pave the ground for the withdrawal of the foreign forces, advising the insurgent group to use “the last chance” and come to negotiation table.

The council’s secretary, Aminoddin Mozaffari said that everything could be discussed and Taliban could tell all they want, but they should join the peace process.

“The foreigners are here to fight terrorism. If the armed groups reach an agreement with the government of Afghanistan and decline the foreign terrorists, the foreign soldiers will definitely leave our country,” Mozaffari said.

Hajji Din Mohammad, deputy head of the peace council had earlier said that the foreign troops’ drawdown would be discussed with Taliban during the peace talks. He had also said that Taliban leaders were consulting to talk about joining the peace negotiations.

President Ashraf Ghani said in the Kabul Process session that his government would hold talks with the Taliban without any preconditions. But the militants rejected the proposal, emphasizing on talks with the US government.

Political expert, Shahzada Massoud believes that the existence of the foreign soldiers is a big challenge to hold talks with the group.

“Taliban are opposing the talks for years because of the presence of the foreign forces. I think the government should include this as an item of discussion.”

An offshoot of the Taliban led by Mullah Rassoul, has welcomed the government’s proposal for peace talks.
