KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani reiterated that regional and international community should join hands to counter rising trend of terror which posed great threat to regional security specifically Afghanistan
Earlier, the president leading a high-level delegation on Thursday arrived in Russia to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the BRICS summits.
A statement from the Presidential Palace on Friday said that Ghani held a detailed meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko in Ufa city in Russia.
Both the dignitaries discussed bilateral cooperation in trade, economic, investment, culture and fighting terrorism.
Ghani sought special cooperation of Belarus to get rid of militancy and terrorism in the region. “Afghan security forces are capable enough to stand against evil forces that challenge regional security and stability and my country needs stresses on regional cooperation.”
President Alexander Lukashenko praised Afghanistan efforts, saying that Kabul would play pivotal role to connect regional states because of its geo-strategic location.
Meanwhile, Ghani met with President of Tajikistan Imam Ali Rahman. Ghani said: “We will like to strengthen our bilateral cooperation and support each other and it will be a precedent for others to follow suit.”
The terrorists established hideouts in Afghanistan soon after Pakistani military operation against terrorists in tribal areas. The terrorists started their activities inside Afghanistan.
The president also mentioned insecurity and instability in northern Afghanistan. “Foreign terrorists challenge our security but our troops have capacity to thwart evil designs of the enemy,” he noted.
“We need regional and international cooperation and support against Daesh since it is a joint threat for all of us,” Ghani added.
Imam Ali Rahman said his country had long-standing ties with Afghanistan and both countries were close friends. As many as 80 different contracts had been signed between the two states and President Imam Ali ensured to further bolster bilateral cooperation in multifaceted areas.
Afghanistan has good geo-strategic location and a connection for Tajikistan to link it with sea therefore security and stability in Afghanistan is of immense importance for Tajikistan.
He also showed his interest in railway line to connect Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
Tajik president also ensured joint support to fight insecurity on border between the two states. He also said he discussed Afghanistan security situation in his meeting with Pakistani officials since it was important for KASA 1000 project and other economic projects.
The SCO was established jointly by China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in 2001; Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, India and Mongolia are given observer status in the organization.
The BRICS is a new association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. (PAN)
