KABUL: A retired British army general says that the US-led Western troops who invaded Afghanistan in the name of ‘war on terror’ have been defeated in the war.
Lord David Richards said Saturday that the United States as the flag bearer of the 20-year long war in Afghanistan underestimated its own soldiers and other NATO troops who were killed and injured in the war, adding that Washington pushed Afghanistan once again to the pit of civil war.
The former UK general called on the country’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “immediately” make a strategy for Afghanistan to prevent the country from turning once again to the safe haven for terrorists after the West military failure.
Richards said that the US geo strategy failed not only in Afghanistan, but also in Iraq, Libya and Syria in the past 20 years, warning that the mentioned countries particularly Afghanistan could once again host terrorist groups.
He said that big cities of Afghanistan like Kandahar where the US maintained a powerful military base would fall to Taliban due to a power vacuum after the US and NATO pullout.
He warned the United States that it would wait a second September 11 incident by terrorists from Afghanistan.
Terrorist attacks targeted the World Trade Center in New York as well as the Pentagon building in Washington on September 11, 2001, killing around 3,000 people. The US invaded Afghanistan after Taliban refused to hand over al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden who was believed to be hidden in Afghanistan’s eastern mountainous areas.
The US officials had accused Bin Laden and his terrorist organization al-Qaeda of organizing and carrying out attacks on the twin towers as the US defense department building.
