KABUL – A roadside bombing in the northwestern city of Peshawar targeted Pakistani security forces on Monday, killing a security officer and injuring nine others, including three civilians, according to police reports.
The attack, which took place along the vital Warsak Road in Peshawar, occurred when an improvised explosive device detonated near a Frontier Corps van. Police spokesman Bilal Ahmed Faizi confirmed that the blast also inflicted injuries on three bystanders. An ongoing investigation is being conducted, as stated by police officer Syed Ashfaq Anwar.
The outlawed Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for this attack. Their intensified assaults on Pakistani security forces have escalated since their unilateral cease-fire agreement with the government broke down in November of the previous year.
While distinct from the Afghan Taliban, the TTP maintains an alliance with them. The Afghan Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 after the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces, a development that emboldened the TTP. Consequently, they have frequently carried out attacks near the Afghan border and elsewhere within Pakistan.
Despite claims by the Pakistani military that significant progress has been made in clearing the northwest region of militants, persistent violence raises concerns about the potential regrouping of the Pakistani Taliban in the area.
