KABUL – Russia advocates for the unfreezing of Afghanistan’s financial assets, emphasizing the importance of supporting the country’s stability. Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President’s special envoy, expressed this stance during the Tashkent conference. He echoed the Islamic Emirate’s call for the unconditional return of frozen assets by the US, condemning it as “robbery.”
Despite pressure from humanitarian groups, the US has affirmed its decision not to release billions in Afghan gold, investments, and foreign currency reserves frozen after the Taliban’s takeover in August. Kabulov, attending the international conference on Afghanistan, voiced Russia’s wholehearted agreement with the demand for asset return.
Speaking on broader international efforts, Kabulov mentioned plans for events on Afghanistan involving regional partners. He referred to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s intention to convene special envoys, emphasizing the need for thorough scrutiny of the upcoming report.
