KABUL: Habiba Sarabi, one of women members of the Afghan peace negotiation team was honored by the Simone Veil, a French prize usually conferred on hardworking women around the world.
Sarabi received the prize on Monday from the French Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.
“Dr. Habiba Sarabi is serving on equality, women’s rights and democracy in Afghanistan. She is today on the front line of the peace negotiations,” Martinon said in a statement.
The French embassy in Kabul also said that the Simone Veil prize was granted to Habiba Sarabi, member of Afghan government’s negotiation team.
“Some people in Afghanistan oppose women’s part in power and terrorist groups target them. We condemn terror of woman judge, journalist, right activists and physicians. They need to know that peace without women is impossible in Afghanistan.”
Simone Veil was a French lawyer, politician, women’s rights activist who defended the abortion right. She was sent to concentration camp when France was invaded by Nazi Germany.
Veil managed to legalize the right of abortion in France in 1975.
