AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in a military operation on Friday retook the control of Nawzad district in southern Helmand province.
The operation was led by Kandahar Police Chief, Gen. Abdul Raziq.
The Ministry of Interior (MoI) confirmed the retaking of Nawzad district, and said that according to initial reports 50 Taliban fighters have been killed in this operation.
“The security forces recaptured Nawzad district this morning. Clearance operations are still going on and 50 Taliban militants are dead according to initial reports,” said Sediq Sediqqi, the MoI spokesman.
He added that at least two security forces were killed and 31 others wounded during the military operation.
The district fell into hand of the Taliban on Wednesday.
According to local officials, intense fighting has been reported over the past two days between security forces and the Taliban fighters.
No civilian casualties were reported. Taliban are yet to comment about the operation.
Nawzad has fallen into hand of the Taliban several times in past 14 years. Six years back, the Afghan security forces were succeeded to retake control of the district after four years under Taliban’s control. The government announced on that time that it was trying to prepare plans for a concrete security in the district.
