AT-KABUL: Afghan security forces had retaken Sangin district of southern Helmand province after fierce clashes with the Taliban insurgents, said officials.
Member of the Helmand provincial council, Attaullah Afghan, said that security forces after an operation has retaken the police headquarter and district chief’s office.
He said that Afghan Special Forces arrived at the district and the fighting was still continued in some parts of the district. Without giving complete details, he said that the Taliban suffered heavy casualties in the battle.
In a media statement issued here, Ministry of Interior (MoI) said that Afghan commandos supported by air force have launched different operations against insurgents in Helmand province.
MoI said that last night a Taliban commander, Mullah Naser Nezami, was killed along with his 50 fighters in Sangin district. Several others were injured in the last night operation, the statement added.
According to the statement, the government is trying to provide ammunition and weapons to the security forces in the province.
