AT-KABUL: Taliban’s increasing presence and activities have sparked worries among the members of senate, as they say that more than half of area of the Khak-e-Jabbar district is under the militants’ control.
“The government’s armed opposition have presence in 40 out of 60 villages of Khak-e-Jabbar district. They have warned residents to make their family members serving in the government’s military or civil organs to leave their jobs. They also force people to feed them,” said senator Najiba Hosseini on Tuesday.
The militants entered the district during the ceasefire days and did not return, she said.
Khak-e-Jabbar is one of Kabul’s 15 districts lying some 45 kilometers east of the capital.
Head of Senate, Fazl Hadi Muslimyar, called on the government to pay serious attention to the situation of Khak-e-Jabbar.
“We are worried that the armed opposition’s presence in Khak-e-Jabbar will pose a serious threat to the Kabul city,” Muslimyar said.
Eastern districts of Kabul have been the scenes of moves against the government, as some slogans were seen written on the walls in Bagrami, Khak-e-Jabbar’s adjacent district reading support to the Daesh terrorist groups.
Hashmat Stanekzai, Kabul police spokesman, confirmed some “unrest” in the capital’s districts, but said it would not threaten people’s normal life.
“Kabul is bordering two or three insecure districts and we have seen sporadic moves by the enemy in some of capital’s districts. But these are not at the level to threaten people’s life or ban students from going to schools or government employees to go to their offices,” said Stanekzai.
He added that military operations would be soon launched in some districts of Kabul including the Khak-e-Jabbar.
