AT News Report-KABUL: A large number of senators on their Sunday session emphasized on convening Loya Jirga—a Traditional Assembly of Afghan people in a bid to discuss the new US strategy and to seek solutions to the ongoing challenges the country is facing.
According to senators, situation in the country is getting worse, in which holding of Loya Jirga is the only remedy to collectively resolve all the burning issues.
“The current situation in the country requires that Loya Jirga should be convened as it could resolve a number of problems the country is confronting with,” Senator Sher Mohammad Akhunzada said.
Another Senator, Zalmai Zabuli said, “We support the demand of Loya Jirga on the condition to be supportive to the unity government and we strongly oppose it, if the initiative of Loya Jirga is based on challenging the system.”
He added, prior to hold the Jirga, the government must make sure that it is not a move to collapse the system.
Moreover, some senators called on the politicians to work with the government and make sure convening the traditional grand assembly is an attempt to resolve the challenges rather than to topple the unity government.
Concluding the session, the Chairman of the Senate, Fazl Hadi Muslimyar said, convening the Loya Jirga should be held as per constitution of the country. “Holding Loya Jirga would be possible when election was being conducted to elect the representatives for the Jirga,” he added.
This comes at a time when the former President, Hamid Karzai has been strongly opposed and criticized the new US strategy on Afghanistan that fuels war rather than bringing peace and stability to the war-hit country. In addition to that, Hamid Karzai believed and asserted the new warrior strategy by the Trump administration is a deliberate attempt to fuel regional rivalries over his strife-torn country.
To hold a comprehensive discussion on the new US strategy, Karzai in a formal letter has urged President Ashraf Ghani to convene an emergency Loya Jirga to find out a national solution to the ongoing challenges in the country.
