Senior ANP leader Haji Adeel dies

Karzai expresses condolence

AT-KABUL: Senior leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) Haji Mohammad Adeel passed away on Friday in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Born on October 25, 1944, the former senator died due to heart attack. His funeral prayer was offered at 4:00 pm in Peshawar. Haji Adeel is survived by three sons and a daughter.

Former President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, expressed deep sadness on the passing away of Senator Haji Adeel.

Extending his condolence to the bereaved family, Karzai said that Haji Adeel played important role in strengthening unity among Pashtuns, on both sides of the Durand Line.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to bless the departed soul with eternal peace and grant courage to the family to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude.

ANP has announced three days of mourning on the passing away of its senior leader.

“I am deeply saddened over the death of ANP’s veteran leader Haji Mohammad Adeel. He was the leader of every political and democratic movement,” President of the ANP, Asfandyar Wali Khan, tweeted.

Afrasiab Khattak, another senior leader of ANP, said the sad demise of Haji Adeel is “end of an era”. He said that an outstanding democratic and honest political leader was no more.

Adeel served the ANP on various positions including senior vice president, acting president of the party, additional general secretary, chairman election commission of the party, parliamentary leader of the party in Upper House of the parliament, and member central and provincial executive committees.

The late Pashtun nationalist leader was elected member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (then NWFP) assembly in 1990, 1993, and 1997. Haji Adeel also served as finance minister in the provincial cabinet in 1993. He was appointed deputy speaker of the provincial assembly in 1997-1999.

His father Hakeem Abdul Jalil was actively involved in the non-violence movement against the British Empire in sub-continent and was the president of All India National Congress Committee Peshawar District. Hakeem was a close companion of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan) and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatama Gandhi).
