Kabul: Just two days after a gunman killed 11 people at a Los Angeles-area dance studio, seven more victims were shot dead in an agricultural area near San Francisco, as California suffered one of its bloodiest spates of mass gun violence in decades.
Saturday night’s shooting in the predominantly Asian neighborhood of Monterey Park has sent a wave of fear among Asian-Americans in Los Angeles and heightened security to guard Chinese revelers.
Monterey Park, with a population of about 60,000, is located in the eastern suburbs of Los Angeles, and most of its residents are Asian immigrants from China or first-generation Asian-Americans. The shooting took place in the heart of the city while masses of red lanterns decorated the streets to mark the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year and large “Happy Year of the Rabbit” banners were also visible.
California has witnessed two mass shootings in the last week, with the police saying that suspects in both cases used semiautomatic handguns and both appeared to have connections to at least some of the victims.
After years of Chinese New Year celebrations being stagnant due to the spread of the Corona virus, this year it was predicted that 100,000 people would celebrate the Chinese New Year in Monterey Park with their friends and relatives for two days.
