AT-KABUL: Hundreds of plots have been illegally sold in Sherzai Town of Nangarhar province, said the provincial council deputy chief on Sunday.
The project of 500-plot housing schemes which is also known as Sherzai Town, was launched nearly eight years ago. The project was halted as the policemen had already paid Afs30, 000 per plot.
The provincial council deputy chief, Lal Muhammad Durrani, told Pajhwok Afghan News that police officials in Nangarhar are allegedly involved in the misappropriation of funds and sold hundreds of plots illegally. The police headquarters rejected to comment about the corruption but one of the police officials said on the condition of anonymity that the police headquarters had paid Afs30,000 for each plot to the government years ago. However, the policemen yet to get the allocated plots, he added.
Without providing any names, Durrani said that an official from the police headquarters is directly involved in the corruption case and allegedly stopping the project. He asked the government to investigate the case.
He said that he would provide a list of those officials who have been involved in embezzlement and selling of the plots illegally.
Meanwhile, the provincial governor Saleem Khan Kunduzi said that a committee has been established to probe the allegations.
“Dozens of displaced families are currently living in the Sharzai Town,” Jalalabad’s Mayor, Hamidullah Afghan, said. He said that they had issued allotment letters to the applicants introduced by the police headquarters.
