KABUL: A report examining the US performance in Afghanistan says that the Afghan government is facing an “existential crisis” in the wake of the doubling of Taliban attacks since Washington reached an agreement with the militants in February 2020.
An agreement between Washington and Taliban in Doha has led to a surge in Taliban attacks, rather than facilitating meaningful negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban, according to the US Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction.
A SIGAR report reveals that Afghan security forces have been blindsided by an escalation of Taliban attacks, and that the fighting has led to an increase in civilian casualties.

Another report by the State Ministry for Peace Affairs has revealed that the Taliban had increased their attacks by about 35 percent every month since the beginning of the year.
A four-month report released on Thursday states that the Taliban carried out 22,000 attacks in the past four months, killing 2,566 civilians and wounding 3,021 civilians.
According to the report, 650 women and more than 900 children were among those killed. Most of them were killed in assassinations and targeted killings, landmines, rocket attacks, ground clashes and suicide attacks.
The fighting has also led to an exodus displaced hundreds of thousands of people, the report said, adding that the hasty withdrawal of the United States forces has emboldened the Taliban to consider the military option as a solution, and that regional intelligence agencies have also encouraged them to keep their war machine running.
“Although the Afghan government has repeatedly called for peace, the Taliban group has always responded violently by rejecting the call,” it said, accusing them of violating human rights of citizens living in areas under their control.
The report claims that thousands of Taliban fighters were killed and wounded in military strikes and clashes.
A UN report has also said that 1,659 were killed and 3,254 were injured in the violence in the first six months of the year. The Taliban were blamed for 39 percent of the casualties.
