AT-KABUL: There are some circles who want to see the collapse of the Tirinkot, the provincial capital of Uruzgan to the militants for their own interests.
In a meeting with security forces in the province, Gen. Daud Shah Wafadar, 205 Attal Military Corps commander in the south, alleged that some circles wanted the collapse of the province in a bid to preserve their personal interests.
His remark comes one day after the Ministry of Interior sacked Uruzgan Police Chief Mohammad Wais Samimi following insecurity increase in the province.
Provincial Spokesman Dost Mohammad Nayab said that the police chief had been a Taliban sympathizer, adding that Sayed Aqa Saqeb, an experienced officer was assigned as acting provincial police chief.
“Some 89 security posts were left to be captured by militants without resistance under a deal, the figures involved in the deal wanted to hand over Tirinkot to Taliban, but we prevented them,” Pajhwok Afghan News quoted Wafadar, as saying.
He said these figures thought they could do whatever they wanted to, but added there was a law.
Wafadar assured that the Afghan National Army (ANA) jointly with other forces had thwarted this conspiracy and deployed new units to all regions of the province.
At least 290 militants had been killed during operations during ongoing operation in the province, he added.
Earlier this month, hundreds of the Taliban fighters attacked the Trinkot city, but were pushed backed by the security forces.
“Taliban insurgents increase their attacks on the checkpoints,” governor spokesman said, adding that Uruzgan-Kandahar highway was blocked for 15 days and people were facing problems.
Hundreds of the Taliban insurgents have been killed during the past 20 days in the province, he added.
Security forces also sustained casualties during fighting, he said without giving exact tolls of the casualties.
