By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Afghan and US troops freed Ali Haider Gilani, son of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani during an operation in eastern part of the country, who will be officially handed over to Pakistani officials in Kabul tomorrow (Wednesday) , officials confirmed Tuesday.
“Gilani was released through a joint operation in Giyan district of Paktika province,” National Security Council’s Spokesman Tawab Ghorzang said.
Gilani the junior was kidnapped by a group of armed men three years ago in Pakistani city of Multan after a short gunfire in which his two colleagues were killed.
He was believed to have been brought to Afghanistan.
Ghorzang said that Gilani was in good health condition and was transported to Pakistan embassy in Kabul.
He stated that Afghanistan expected Pakistan to take action against terrorist groups inside its soil.
Defense ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri, said that the operation was launched Monday night.
He said that Gilani was abducted and kept by the al-Qaeda terrorist network, adding that four fighters of the network were killed during the operation.
Defense Ministry said Gilani will be officially handed over to Pakistani officials in Kabul tomorrow (Wednesday) in presence of media.
The NATO-led Resolute Support mission also confirmed the release of Gilani in Afghanistan by the U.S. Special Operations Forces and Afghan Commandos in a partnered raid.
“Under Operation Freedom’s Sentinel authority, the counter-terror mission was planned and launched after evidence of terrorist activity was confirmed,” the mission said in a statement.
“Four enemy combatants were killed as a result of the operation. No other injuries or damage was observed or reported.”
Through Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, the U.S. continues its counterterrorism mission. The U.S. partnership with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is highly effective and critical to the fight against terrorism and ensuring peace and stability in the region.
It is pertained to mention that according to report Pakistan former premier son was in lock up for three years.
