KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani says that the Soviet Union withdrawal from Afghanistan was conducted in an irresponsible manner and that “no measure (scheme) was considered about the future”.
Marking the 32 anniversary of Soviet Union withdrawal from Afghanistan, President Ghani cited the remarks in a video on Sunday.
The irresponsible withdrawal of the Red Army, Ghani said “was the reason for the destruction of security forces and security systems as well as (Afghanistan) infrastructure”.
Ghani said that Afghanistan was rocked by civil wars among the Jihadi groups after the Soviet Union left the country.” He said that many countries in World opposed the Red Army’s invasion in Afghanistan. He called the national unity of the people as a reason for the defeat of the Red Army in Afghanistan.
Talking about the peace process, he said that peace should maintain the security and civilians organizations and that women, children, youths and other aspects of the society should benefit from it.
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. The Red Army remained in the country for more than 10 years and after it suffered heavy casualties in fighting with the Jihadi groups, which were supported by the US and Pakistan, it left Afghanistan on February 15, 1989. But the Afghan government was then supported by Moscow. After the collapse of President Najibullah’s government, the Jihadi groups engaged into fighting each other for power that forced millions of people to leave the country.
