AT-KABUL: Afghan Special Force in night-raids against a stronghold of the Taliban killed at least 10 and detained another 20 Taliban fighters in Kunduz province, security officials said.
The operations were carried out last night in Chardara district, the main stronghold of the Taliban, in Kunduz in which Najib, a key Taliban commander along with his nine fighters were killed and 20 more were injured, provincial Police Chief, Qasim Jangalbagh on Wednesday told newsmen.
The operations were conducted in villages of Ghondai, Khalazi, Hazratha and other villages of Chardara district.
A number of ammunitions and weapons were also seized during the raids he said.
Taliban, who launched their spring offensives early this month, mainly concentrated their attacks on Kunduz city and its districts, but were pushed back and suffered heavy losses over the past two weeks, according to local officials.
Kunduz city was the first provincial capital to fall for few days to Taliban last year that left thousands of people displaced and most of the government buildings and private organizations’ offices were partly destroyed and looted.
Afghan government after recapturing the city established a special military unit for the province and increased the number of police and deployed additional troops including Special Forces to prevent the possible fall of the city back to the Taliban.
Kunduz play a key role as a transit hub between capital Kabul and neighboring Tajikistan while is the only route to remote Takhar and Badakhshan provinces in northeastern Afghanistan.
The province also play a key role for Taliban who try to connect their fighters in northeastern, northern and central provinces through Kunduz.
