KABUL – A suicide bomber detonated explosives near a Kabul Bank branch in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least five people and wounding seven others, police said.
The attack took place in Kunduz province, with a police spokesman, Jumauddin Khaksar, confirming that the dead included a security guard at the bank. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, and authorities are investigating those behind the attack.
While suicide bombings have become less frequent since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, militants from the Islamic State (IS) group’s Afghan affiliate have continued to carry out attacks across the country. The group has particularly targeted minority Shiite Muslims and high-profile Taliban officials.
The latest attack follows a suicide bombing in Kabul two months ago that killed Khalil Haqqani, the Taliban’s refugee minister, in one of the most high-profile assassinations since the group’s return to power.
