KABUL: Taliban unleashed a barrage of rockets at the Kandahar airport on Wednesday, causing no casualties, provincial officials said. Six rockets hit the airport at around 11 noon hours.
Claiming responsibility, the Taliban said a key military center was targeted with multiple missiles, causing heavy human and material losses.
Taliban has recently intensified violence across the country in the wake of ongoing peace efforts to end the war.
Recently, a Taliban roadside bomb explosion killed four passengers and wounded 14 others in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province.
The fatalities come as the passenger’s bus hit a militant planted roadside bomb.
The blast occurred when the Taliban insurgents forced the driver to change its direction to a dusty road, the official added.
Moreover, a number of Taliban militants gang-raped and shot dead a 16-year-old girl in northern Jawzjan province.
Spokesman for the 209 Shaheen Military Corps, Mohammad Haneef Rezayee said the incident took place two days back in Darzab district of the province.
The Taliban kidnapped the girl with her parents two months back, Rezayee claimed.
According to him, residents of Qushtapa and Darzab districts of the province staged a protest against the Taliban, demanding the group to release the captives and return the dead body of the girl.
