KABUL: The Taliban militants stormed into a key army base in the western province of Heart, killing 16 security forces, an official said on Monday.
Provincial council member Wakil Ahmad Karkhi said that the military compound is located in the outskirt of Salma dam, and that the clashes between the Afghan security forces and Taliban took place on Sunday night.
The Taliban seized security forces weapons and ammunitions during the attack, he said, calling on the government to take serious steps to ensure security for Salma Dam.
Taliban have not commented regarding the attack so far.
Herat is relatively insecure province in the west, where Taliban have recently intensified their attacks on the Afghan security forces amid the withdrawal of US and NATO troops from the war-battered country.
