KABUL – The Taliban leader, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, has declined a meeting request from Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan, according to Taliban sources.
The Pakistani top cleric expressed his desire to visit Kandahar on Monday to hold talks with Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, but the request faced a rejection, as confirmed by a source in the Taliban foreign ministry.
Amir Khan Muttaqi, who proposed the meeting request on behalf of Fazl-ur-Rehman, received a negative response. Consequently, he was directed to meet with the Prime Minister instead of pursuing the initially planned meeting with Haibatullah.
Fazl-ur-Rehman arrived in Kabul on Sunday with the primary objective of easing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, focusing on the matter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The rejection of the meeting request adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two nations.
