KABUL: The operatives of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) have thwarted a Taliban plan to assassinate a journalist in Kabul, top official said on Sunday.
The First Vice President, Amrullah Saleh appreciated the efforts of the intelligence forces for arresting the culprit.
“I appreciate the National Directorate of Security (NDS) forces for the arrest of a Taliban terrorist, Mirza Jan, trained in Pakistan and worked for a circle so called Noorullah,” Saleh said in a statement. “He wanted to kill a journalist in PD 12 (of Kabul city).”
He added that the Taliban could not declare their violence and that the “voices of people will not be silent”.
Last week, a number of unidentified gunmen opened fire on the family of a slain journalist Bismillah Adel Aymaq, killing three people and wounded four others.
Bismillah Adel was Editor-in-Chief of Voice of Ghor radio station. He was killed by some unknown armed men in Ferozkoh, the capital city for the western province of Ghor around two months ago.
The Afghanistan Journalist Protection Committee in its annual report announced that there was a 26 percent increase in violence against journalists in 2020 in Afghanistan.
The committee blamed the Taliban and ISIS-K Daesh for the largest part committing violence against journalists.
