In a stark demonstration of its stringent judicial practices, the Taliban publicly flogged five individuals in Kandahar on Wednesday, October 9. Each person received 39 lashes for charges including adultery, sodomy, and theft, as confirmed by the Taliban’s Supreme Court.
This incident is part of a broader trend, as the number of public floggings across Afghanistan has now reached nine for the day, highlighting the regime’s increasing reliance on corporal punishment. In addition to the floggings, the court in Kandahar imposed various prison sentences: one individual received a seven-year term, another six years, two were sentenced to three years, and one to two years.
The Taliban’s resurgence of public punishment is alarming; over the past three weeks alone, more than 20 individuals have faced similar treatment across multiple provinces. Amu TV reports that in the last three years, over 700 people have been publicly flogged under Taliban rule.
