KABUL – Afghanistan’s Taliban government has refused to disband Afghanistan’s Ministry of Vice and Virtue despite appeals from several Western nations, including Canada, Australia, and European foreign ministers.
Saif-ul-Islam Khyber, the ministry’s spokesman, defended its role, stating it operates under Islamic Sharia and serves the Afghan people’s needs. He also dismissed international concerns over women’s rights, calling them “negative propaganda.” The Taliban, who returned to power in August 2021 after two decades of conflict with the U.S. and its allies, have faced widespread criticism for their governance, particularly over restrictions on women and girls. However, they continue to reject foreign pressure, insisting that Afghanistan’s internal matters should not be dictated by external forces.
