KABUL – The Taliban has dismissed former US President Donald Trump’s claim that Chinese troops are present at Bagram Airfield, one of Afghanistan’s largest former US military bases. Trump alleged that the US should reclaim the base due to its proximity to Chinese nuclear facilities, stating, “We gave it up, and you know who is occupying it at the moment? China.”
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid called Trump’s remarks “emotional” and “based on unsubstantiated information,” clarifying that the airfield is under Taliban control and that no foreign troops, including Chinese, are stationed there. “We request that Trump’s team explain to him and correct his information about Afghanistan,” Mujahid said.
China has also denied any military presence at Bagram, which served as the US-NATO command center for two decades before the 2021 withdrawal. Trump criticized the Biden administration for leaving behind billions of dollars worth of military equipment, claiming the Taliban is now selling it. Mujahid countered that the weapons were “spoils of war” from the former US-backed Afghan government and are now used to protect the country.
