KABUL: The Taliban group on Sunday has removed a ban on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and gave a guarantee of security for its staffers doing humanitarian work in areas under their control across Afghanistan.
In April, the Taliban group imposed ban on the ICRC and World Health Organization (WHO), where Taliban claimed the originations were carrying out suspicious activities during vaccinations campaigns.
“Following continuous contacts and discussions between officials of the Taliban and heads of ICRC in the capital of Qatar, Doha, both parties consented to obey by the old agreement, granting ICRC to resume their activities,” Taliban said in a statement.
Taliban has instructed all fighters to pave the way for ICRC activities and be mindful of security to this committee’s workers and equipment, the statement added.
However, the Taliban did not refer to the WHO in its statement.
It’s worth mentioning that due to suspension of polio program by Taliban, positive case has been increased in some parts of the country, where access to polio vaccination was not possible.
According to a recent statement issued by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the total number of polio cases in 2019 reached 15 cases, saying all of these cases had been reported from inaccessible areas.
Fourteen out of the 15 polio cases this year have been reported from the southern region of Afghanistan, the seven positive cases came from Uruzgan, five from Helmand and two other from Kandahar.
