Taliban shadow governor among 16 fighters killed in Kunduz

AT-Kabul:  National Directorate of Security (NDS) said that Taliban shadow governor for northern Kunduz province has been killed along with 16 Taliban fighters in an airstrike the other night in Kunduz city.

A press statement emailed by NDS to Afghanistan Times here on Wednesday said that the Taliban Shadow governor for Kunduz, Maulvi Salam along with his aide, Zabih, and 15 other fighters were killed in Kunduz at 9:00pm in a coordinated airstrike near Kunduz airport. “Fighters of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Punjabis were also among those killed,” added statement.

It said that the shadow governor along with his fighters wanted to attack the airport.

A press statement issued by Resolute Support Mission (RSM) said that the US forces conducted two airstrikes the other day— the first at approximately 9:15am in the outskirts of Kunduz city, and the second at approximately 11:30pm in the vicinity of the Kunduz airport. The US forces conducted an airstrike on Wednesday at approximately 1:00am in the vicinity of the Kunduz airport. All three airstrikes were conducted for coalition force protection reasons.

A spokesman of RSM said that coalition forces are advising and assisting Afghan forces in Kunduz province.

Wahidullah Mayar, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health said that they have received over 30 dead bodies and more than 200 wounded people in Kunduz hospital. He added that 90 percent of casualties are civilians.

A resident of Kunduz told Afghanistan Times on condition of anonymity that that the city is still in a critical situation. He said that shops, restaurants and public offices are closed and people cannot leave their houses due to fear from the Taliban militants. He said that fighting is still ongoing in airport area of the city.

He said that there are rumors that the militants have entered houses of government employees and looted their properties.

It is pertinent to mention that the Taliban militants captured most parts of the Kunduz city in a massive attack two days ago. Fresh units of security forces have been deployed to the city the other day to recapture the strategic city.
