KABUL – The Taliban have brazenly rejected possible collaboration with any potential United Nations special envoy for Afghanistan, injecting a surge of tension into the diplomatic arena just before the crucial Doha meeting.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid declared an outright refusal to cooperate with any potential United Nations special envoy for Afghanistan. This defiant stance comes just ahead of a pivotal meeting in Qatar, convened by the UN to discuss and potentially appoint a new special envoy for the strife-torn region.
Mujahid has dismissed the need for a UN special representative, asserting that such appointments are typically reserved for countries in crisis and at war. Amplifying the discord, Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, emphatically stated in Kabul that Afghanistan has no use for a UN special envoy.
Despite the binding nature of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2771, mandating the appointment of a special representative for Afghanistan, the Taliban stands unwavering in its rejection. The upcoming Doha meeting, slated for February 18 under the UN Secretary-General’s leadership, is poised to be a battleground of diplomatic tensions as the Taliban’s obstinate stance sets the stage for a high-stakes confrontation.
