Taliban threat to attack major cities, a ‘grand propaganda’: Govt.

AT-KABUL: The government rejects the Taliban’s recent announcement that the militants would attack large cities as a “great propaganda”, while the insurgents are launching an intensive assault on Ghazni city, the capital of the province with the same name. The militants have reportedly burnt parts of the city particularly government offices.

The defense ministry claims it was able to drive the insurgents back and restrain their attacks.

“The security and defense forces are round the clock ready to defend their soil and people. These claims are part of the enemy’s propaganda. They (Taliban militants) could have neither taken any city nor controlled that. They claim just to confuse public opinion. The security forces are ready to defend not only the cities but also the villages and remote areas,” said Ghafoor Ahmad Javid, the ministry’s spokesman.

Javid added that the insurgents planned to attack the provinces of Farah, Faryab and Paktia in the current year, but they were pushed back by the security forces.

A number of newspapers have recently quoted a Taliban official as saying that the group’s fighters plan to attack the large cities. The source has added that the insurgents would use new tactics in their next attacks that would target air force as well.

The situation in some parts of the country is worsening, with the Taliban attacking more areas. They attacked Ghazni city Thursday night. Earlier this year, Taliban stormed Farah city, the capital of the western province with the same name, taking control of the city for a few hours before they were forced to retreat by the security forces’ reinforcement.

Bari Arez, a military expert believes that Taliban’s claim would not be only propaganda, calling on the security forces to be fully prepared.

But, parliamentarian WajmaSapai, called the claim only a war propaganda and far from reality.
