KABUL – The Taliban have again called on the international community for flexibility in recognizing their interim administration as the legitimate ruling government of Afghanistan, despite a recent global backlash after arrests of several women over ‘bad hijab’.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the Taliban, told a news conference that the Taliban are facing many challenges in engaging with other nations, doubling down on their long-lasting quest for global recognition.
Since the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in August 2021, the Taliban have been in control of the war-torn Afghanistan. Despite the continued operation of embassies from various countries in Kabul, no nation has officially recognized the Taliban-led administration as the de jure government.
The plea for recognition comes amid growing criticism of the Taliban’s policies, particularly concerning women’s rights. Recent reports reveal that the Taliban have arrested women for violating their interpretation of appropriate dress codes, raising concerns about the treatment of women under their rule.
This has sparked a debate about the apparent contradiction between the Taliban seeking international recognition while enforcing strict and controversial policies, especially regarding women’s rights.
