KABUL: At least 12 Afghan security forces were killed after their checkpoints were attacked by the Taliban rebels in northern Jawzjan province, local officials said Wednesday. This could be taken as the first attack in such vicious way since undeclared ceasefire and practical measures toward reduction in violence by the Afghan forces and the Taliban fighters. Five other Afghan forces were wounded in the attack.
Provincial Governor’s Spokesman, Marouf Azar said that the militants set attacks on two security checkpoints in Aqcha district of the province. The Taliban insurgent also taken four security forces with them, seized a Humvee and destroyed two vehicles belong to the Afghan security forces, he added.
According to him, the militants also suffered casualties. “Five Taliban were killed and ten others were wounded.”
Meanwhile, Jawzjan provincial council member, Bismillah Sahil put the number causalities among the security forces to 15, saying that six others were taken hostage by the insurgents.
The attack by the Taliban fighters came when their leaders are in Doha of Qatar, preparing for talks with the Afghan peace force. Kabul administration had speeded up Taliban prisoners release as part of peace efforts—and also emphasized on violence reduction from both sides as a trust-building measure.
