KABUL – The Taliban have solidified their role as steadfast allies of al-Qaeda and various other radical jihadist organizations, excluding ISIS, according to recent analyses of their relationships. These ties are rooted in shared ideological beliefs and pragmatic needs, fostering a dangerous collaboration that poses a significant threat to global security.
Over the past three decades, the Taliban and these groups have developed an intricate web of cooperation, exchanging economic, security, and logistical support. Their ideological alignment is evident, as they share similar worldviews and goals. This alliance has deepened to the extent that it has created familial bonds through marriages among their leaders and fighters.
Experts warn that the entangled relationships between the Taliban and other extremist groups present opportunities for terrorism to thrive, particularly in regions where the Taliban establish a foothold. Historical patterns, such as those observed during the Arab Spring, indicate that when political Islamist factions gain power, radical groups often find fertile ground to operate. For instance, the Muslim Brotherhood’s ascent to power in Egypt in 2012 enabled more extreme factions, including al-Jihad and al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya, to regain influence in political affairs.
Despite receiving financial backing from countries like China, Russia, and Iran under the Doha Agreement, the Taliban’s bonds with al-Qaeda and other jihadist organizations remain critical. Current Taliban leadership, particularly the Amir al-Mu’minin (Supreme Leader), shows no signs of distancing from these alliances, reinforcing the likelihood of continued collaboration.
The Taliban’s increasing control over Afghanistan’s diplomatic institutions heightens concerns among both Afghan citizens and international communities. Their presence in these embassies is viewed as a potential gateway for al-Qaeda and other extremist factions to exert influence. Diplomatic missions, due to their immunity under international law, are attractive targets for terrorists.
Recognizing the significance of these institutions, the Taliban have prioritized their influence from the outset of their return to power in Kabul. Their strategies range from coercive measures to persuasion, with some Afghan diplomatic officials choosing to cooperate with the Taliban for ideological or personal reasons. However, others have resisted this alignment, although shifts in regional policies could lead to increased Taliban infiltration into diplomatic spheres.
As the Taliban strengthen their ties with radical groups, the implications for global stability remain dire. Experts urge the international community to closely monitor these developments to mitigate the risk of renewed terrorism and protect democratic values worldwide.
