Afghan leaders reiterate unflinching support to Afghan peace process, shrinking concerns on venue and time of next round of talks

KABUL: The Afghan leaders have reiterated their full support to the Afghan peace process, agreeing to Doha, the capital city of Qatar, as venue for next round of peace talks.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, head of Reconciliation Council on Sunday said they have concluded a joint meeting between the leadership committee council, where all the members reiterated support to the ongoing peace process and the next round of talks will resume back in Doha, Qatar.
“The committee reiterated its full support for the Republic’s negotiation team and decided on clear guidelines for the team for the next round of talks,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah says the leadership committee decided that the next round of peace talks will take place in Doha, Qatar.
In a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani at Presidential Palace, Dr. Abdullah discussed issues related to the peace process and the venue for the next round of the talks.
President Ghani stressed on the importance of coordination between the Afghan government and the Afghan negotiating team, a statement issued by his office said.
Mr. Abdullah told President Ghani that the negotiations will resume on January 5, 2021. Previously, he said the venue for the talks should not be an obstacle.
President Ashraf Ghani agreed to hold the next round of the peace negotiations in Doha, says his Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi, but said the next round of the talks should be inside the country.
Moreover, Waheed Omer, President Ghani’s Adviser as well as Director-General of the Office of Public and Strategic Affairs, said that Afghan President has agreed on holding next rounds of intra-Afghan talks in Qatar. According to him, the agreement was made based on the suggestion of the head of the negotiating team and the head of the High Council for National Reconciliation.
Previously, President Ghani echoed his National Security Advisor’s proposition to hold the second round of the talks inside the country, anywhere the Taliban suggests.
However, Dr. Abdullah said the venue of the talks should not be an obstacle to start the talks.
The Taliban also rejected the plea, saying the talks will resume back in Doha, and this has been agreed between the two negotiating teams.
Mr. Abdullah had hinted to the complexity of the peace talks, saying the second round should be conducted without any delay.
The Afghan and Taliban negotiating team have agreed on a short break after agreeing on rules and regulations to kick start the intra-Afghan talks. They decided to meet again on the table of talks on 5th January after consultations with their leadership.
