AT-KABUL: Briefing members of the Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of the parliament on Sunday, the minister of mines Daud Shah Saba said the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project would create 7,000 jobs in the country.
He said that work on TAPI gas pipeline project would be launched in Afghanistan next year, adding that physical work on the nearly $10 billion gas pipeline project would be kicked off in 2017 and would concluded in 2020.
He furthered that socio-physical survey of the project in Afghanistan would be started in the beginning of 2016. He informed the lawmakers that work on TAPI project has started in the Karakum desert, outside the southern Turkmen city of Mary.
“Transfer of gas to India via Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan would begin in early 2020,” he added. However he termed the project important for creating jobs for the Afghan masses.
“TAPI creates permanent jobs for around 7,000 people in the country,” he remarked. Furthermore, he said that 2,000 more people would be hired to ensure security of the project.
He said that a 750km portion of the pipeline would pass from Herat, Farah, Helmand, Nimroz and Kandahar provinces of the country to reach Pakistan. Pakistan will work on 800km pipeline to connect with India.
This is worth mentioning that leaders of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India inaugurated $10 billion gas pipeline project expected to help ease energy deficits in South Asia and stem tensions in the divided region. TAPI gas pipeline project will also help promote peace and trade in the regional countries.
