AT-KABUL: Construction works of the long awaited Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project will kick start in Turkmenistan on Sunday.
President Ashraf Ghani is also expected to participate in the ceremony. The project is expected to create 50,000 jobs in Afghanistan.
President Ghani while talking to newsmen said that Afghanistan has expanded its economic cooperation with the Central Asian countries. He added that Turkmenistan is committed to support Afghanistan to reach economic development.
President Ghani and Turkmenistan’s President Qurban Ali Berdi Mohammadov during a telephonic conversation around a month ago have agreed to start construction work of the regional pipeline project. During the conversation, President Ghani also accepted Mohammadov’s invitation to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.
The 1,735-kilometer pipeline is expected to carry 33 billion cubic meters of Caspian Sea natural gas per year from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan into Pakistan and then to India. Price estimates range as high as $10 billion and the project is expected to be completed in 2018.
