KABUL – Iran’s Assistant Foreign Minister, Rasoul Mousavi, has called on the Taliban to avoid escaping their international responsibilities including establishing an inclusive government, in rebuke of Taliban Foreign Minister’s recent comments regarding the same issue.
Mousavi emphasized the critical need for peace, stability, security, and sustainable development in the process of forming a comprehensive government in Afghanistan. He also asserted that the concept of “personalization” should not exempt the Taliban from their international responsibilities.
Tehran’s comments come days after Amir Khan Muttaqi, Taliban’s Foreign Minister, criticized countries advocating for an inclusive government in Afghanistan. He stated, “Our prisons do not have as many inmates as you execute,” alluding to allegations against Iran of enforced disappearances and executions in recent years.
Mousavi referred to United Nations Security Council resolutions 2513 and 2593, as well as consensus meetings involving neighboring countries such as Pakistan, China, Uzbekistan, and Iran. These references underscored Iran’s commitment to international norms and expectations in the Afghan context.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, had previously highlighted that the Taliban represents only a part of Afghanistan’s complex reality, not the entirety. He stressed that Iran’s recognition of the Taliban government would depend on the establishment of an all-inclusive government and expressed concerns about the Taliban’s policies regarding women’s education.
