KABUL: Some 4,518 prisoners were freed after President Ashraf Ghani ordered the release as the global Corona virus outbreak threatens lives in Afghanistan.
Ghani’s order includes 10,000 inmates both men and women as well as those teenagers held in the juvenile centers across the country.
The virus has so far infected more than 700 people across Afghanistan mostly in Kabul and the western province of Herat that border Iran, the fourth country with most of infected.
Officials in the jail department said Wednesday that no case of Corona virus was found inside the prisons.
The department said that they however share every suspect case with the ministry of public health and the Afghan-Japan hospital that tests the virus cases.
It said that more than 700 million Afs was allocated for preparing medical equipment for prisons as well as the repair of two buildings in the Central Jail for preventing the spread of the virus.
23 of patients have so far died while 40 were recovered, according to ministry of public health.
