KABUL – Thousands have converged in the Jamrud area for the “Pashtun Justice Jirga,” a powerful three-day gathering organized by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM). Under the leadership of Manzoor Pashteen, the Jirga is addressing critical issues such as forced disappearances, rising violence, and discrimination against Pashtuns.
The assembly, originally opposed by the Pakistani government, was allowed after negotiations with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur. Delayed by logistical issues, the event started on Saturday afternoon, uniting voices under large tents to strategize against injustice.
This pivotal moment comes in the wake of escalating violence, including a recent coal mine attack that claimed the lives of 21 Pashtuns. Despite ongoing political tensions, Pashteen urged Pashtun political factions to put aside differences and unite in confronting the systemic challenges facing their community.
Founded in 2014, PTM advocates for civil rights and justice in Pakistan’s tribal regions, demanding an end to unlawful detentions and extrajudicial killings. The Jirga represents a critical step in their fight for greater accountability.
