AT News Report-KABUL: The NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan is to build a township for female police officers, the NATO troops’ commander in Afghanistan said on Monday.
General John Nicholson said that the families of 300 Afghan policewomen would settle in the 10-block township that is planned to complete in two years.
The project would cost 120 million US dollars and would be constructed by the government of Canada in Kabul.
“This project will fulfill the hopes of a large number of ladies who are serving in the Afghan police force to protect their homeland,” Nicholson said in a ceremony on the occasion of the project kick off.
Some 3,000 women are reportedly serving in the national police and the government has said to increase the number.
Lack of shelter is one of the major problems for the army and police forces especially women. The female police officers welcomed the measure, calling it as “first step to provide shelter” to them.
Sima Rasouli, a police officer said that the township project would encourage more women to join the police force.
