Trans-Afghan Railway Construction Set to Begin in 2025, Linking Central and South Asia

KABUL – Construction of the landmark Trans-Afghan railway, a transformative project connecting Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, is slated to begin in 2025, according to Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport, Ilhom Mahkamov. The announcement, reported by Kun.uz, marks a significant step forward for the long-anticipated infrastructure initiative aimed at boosting regional trade and connectivity.

The project will include the expansion of an 80-kilometer section of railway, enabling access to Pakistani and Iranian ports through Afghanistan. Minister Mahkamov confirmed that Uzbekistan’s president has been briefed on the selected route and ongoing cooperation with project donors.

The Trans-Afghan railway, first proposed under the “Termez – Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar” roadmap, was initially set to begin preparation in May 2021, with construction starting in September of the same year. However, the political transition in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover delayed progress. Despite these challenges, Afghanistan’s interim government joined the initiative in December 2021, reigniting momentum for the project.

In July 2022, an expedition was launched to determine the railway’s route and conduct a feasibility study. The railway, expected to span 573 kilometers, will have an annual freight capacity of up to 20 million tons, significantly enhancing trade flows across the region.

Cost estimates for the project vary, with Uzbekistan’s “BOSHTRANSLOYIHA” institute projecting 4.6,ℎ’4.6billion,whilePakistansassessmentplacesitat8.2 billion. Media reports suggest the final cost could range between 4.84.8billionand6 billion.

The Trans-Afghan railway is envisioned as a critical transport corridor, linking the European Union, Russia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and ultimately Southeast Asia. It promises to unlock new economic opportunities, reduce transit times, and strengthen regional integration.

As preparations advance, the project represents a rare example of international cooperation in a historically volatile region, offering hope for stability and economic growth. Further updates are expected as stakeholders finalize plans ahead of the 2025 construction start date.
