“Trilateral peace deal needed between US, Afghanistan, Taliban”

KABUL: In the midst of the Afghan peace journey and US envoy’s negotiations with Taliban in Qatar, the High Peace Council says that peace process is in need of a trilateral agreement between the United States, Afghanistan and the Taliban.

Peace Council member Abdul Hakim Mujahid said peace should be under eyes of the Afghan government, the Taliban and the US.

“There are three major players in Afghanistan – the Afghan government, Taliban extremist group and the U.S.-led international community. Restoring peace is impossible without the consent of this triangle,” he maintained, “After the United States and the Taliban reach a peace deal; the militant group should sit in the negotiating table with the Afghan government to iron out the stalemate.”

This is as the U.S. and Taliban representatives have resumed peace talks in Qatar and are believed to be discussing withdrawal of the American troops from Afghanistan, permanent cease-fire and removal of Taliban members from terrorist blacklist.

Spokesman for the Taliban group, Zabiullah Mujahid, said a delegation of nine Taliban members led by Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai is holding talks with the US officials in Qatar.

This is the fourth of preliminary peace talks in Qatar.

Political analyst Wahid Mojda believes that ongoing peace talks in Qatar are far more serious than any other time. “It seems a promising future for peace negotiations is unfolding as the U.S. officials are more willing than ever to cave to Taliban’s demands. From now on, the Taliban would sit in the negotiating table with the Afghan government,” he said.

Amid painstaking negotiations in Qatar, President Ghani’s Envoy for Reconciliation, Mohammad Dawodzai, travelled to China on Wednesday.

Russia’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, has also asserted that U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad will visit Moscow in his peace quest in February.
