AT-KABUL: Officials have said that a tripartite Afghanistan-Pakistan-Indonesia conference of religious scholars scheduled on Friday in Indonesian capital Jakarta will reflect on Afghan peace and stability, said officials.

The tripartite conference will discuss building a consensus and support for possible peace negotiations in Afghanistan. A statement issued by High Peace Council said that the Afghan delegation will consist of 20 clerics.

This comes as senior Pakistani clerics in the past have expressed support for the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.

The conference was decided in a meeting between head of High Peace Council’s secretariat, Akram Khplwak, and Indonesian vice-president, Jusuf Kalla in Indonesia. It was proposed by Indonesian President JokoWidodo in January. Earlier, Indonesian VP Kalla had said that the role of Islamic scholars could be crucial in forging a path for sustainable peace in Afghanistan.
