AT-KABUL: President of the United States, Donald Trump said that wars in Afghanistan and Syria must be ended.
“I inherited a total mess in Syria and Afghanistan, the “Endless Wars” of unlimited spending and death,” he tweeted on Friday.
“During my campaign I said, very strongly, that these wars must finally end. We spend $50 Billion a year in Afghanistan and have hit them so hard that we are now talking peace after 18 long years.”
He furthered: “Syria was loaded with ISIS until I came along. We will soon have destroyed 100% of the Caliphate, but will be watching them closely. It is now time to start coming home and, after many years, spending our money wisely. Certain people must get smart!.”
Before that, he touted progress in Qatar talks, saying the talks in Afghanistan ‘are going well’.
“Afghanistan talks are proceeding well,” Trump wrote on Twitter. He did not address any possible peace accord with the Taliban or the presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
The Trump administration has moved towards withdrawals of U.S. forces after years of overseas deployments. A U.S. official said last month that Trump planned to withdraw more than 5,000 of the 14,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
But Trump’s fellow Republican U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered legislation urging the United States to keep troops in Afghanistan as well as Syria, although it was uncertain whether it would become law.
