KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday met NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House, where he said that war in Afghanistan was “unfortunate” and “ridiculous.”
“I think we’ve made a lot of great strides recently in Afghanistan. It is — we call it the “endless war.” Nineteen years. The real number is 19 years. It is unfortunate. It is ridiculous. It is been a very interesting period of time,” Trump said.
“But we’ve made a lot of strides. A lot of things are happening in Afghanistan that are very positive. So we’ll see how that all comes out,” He added.
Meanwhile, Stoltenberg said that NATO allies strongly believe that it is “important to support the U.S. efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis or the war in Afghanistan.”
Trump’s remark has come when his Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad is currently engaged in talks with Afghan officials.
He in a tweet said that he held good meeting with President Ashraf Ghani. “It was a good meeting that reinforced our shared commitment to achieving peace. We look forward to the formation of a unified, inclusive Afghan negotiating team to lead the Afghan Peace Process,” he tweeted.
He also visited Kandahar, a city in southern country of the country, where he saw his youth. “Getting outside of Kabul is important to me. I met with civil society leaders who have long called for peace, and recognize that now is the time to finally attain it,” he said
“President Ashraf Ghani’s Chief of Staff Rahimi joined me. Together we sat with provincial leaders, elders, women and activists to discuss their views. All Afghans have a stake in shaping Afghanistan’s future and we should welcome all of these voices in the Afghan peace process,” he added.
