KABUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Ankara was seeking Pakistan and Hungary’s involvement to secure Kabul International Airport.
He also said that his country would need “diplomatic, logistic and financial assistance” from the United States to protect and run Kabul Airport after the U.S. led allied exit.
“If they don’t want us to leave Afghanistan, if they want a (Turkish) support there, then the diplomatic, logistic and financial support that the United States will give us will of great importance,” Erdogan said. Turkey, a majority Muslim nation which has close historic ties to Afghanistan, currently has some 500 soldiers in the war-torn country.
The Afghan government has not showed any reaction in regards as of now. But Pakistan is always accused of providing training camps and financial support to the Taliban group in its soil. The relations between the two countries have recently been severed. The top officials of the two countries have recently expressed critical remarks on each other.
The Taliban in a statement opposed Turkey’s offer of guarding the Kabul Airport. The group said that under the February 29 peace deal, all countries active as part of the NATO mission in Afghanistan must leave.
The U.S. President Joe Biden said regarding Afghanistan, “there was a strong consensus in the room among the leaders … on Afghanistan. Our troops are coming home, but we agreed that our diplomatic, economic, humanitarian commitment with the Afghan people … will endure.”
