KABUL – Thomas West, the US special envoy for Afghanistan, has strongly condemned the recent devastating attack on a Shia mosque located in Baghlan province. He highlighted the immense suffering endured by the Shia community as a result of “violent extremism.”
“Afghanistan’s Shi’a community has suffered far too much from violent extremists,” West stated on Tuesday.
In addition to addressing this tragic event, West also noted that the Herat region experienced a series of earthquakes on Sunday morning, which further exacerbated the already challenging humanitarian situation in the country.
He urged continuous support for relief organizations in their vital efforts to meet the urgent needs of the Afghan population. These needs include the provision of shelter, clean drinking water, medicine, and various other essential resources.
A suicide bombing took place inside the Imam Zaman Mosque in Pul-e-Khumri city, situated at the heart of northern Baghlan province. This horrific incident resulted in the loss of at least 17 lives, with 30 others sustaining injuries. However, it’s worth noting that the Taliban reported a lower casualty figure, stating that seven individuals were affected.
This attack is a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by Afghanistan and the need for international support in addressing the country’s complex humanitarian issues.
