KABUL: The commander of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission and U.S. forces in Afghanistan Gen. Scott Miller has said that no official order regarding withdrawal of half of the U.S. troops has been received yet.
In a trip to eastern Nangarhar province, Miller visited the Army’s Selab Military Corps and held a meeting with Governor Hayatullah Hayat.
According to governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani, the US general says so far there have been no orders to show that foreign forces would leave Afghanistan.
Selab Military Corps commander Lt. Gen. Mohammad Zaman Waziri was also present at the meeting with Hayat, he said.
The meeting conferred on the overall security of Nangarhar, creation of local army, equipping security forces in the province and the peace process.
Khogyani did not give more details regarding the meeting, but a video clip of the meeting went viral in some media outlets, in which Gen. Millar talks about the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
Maj. Mohammad Haroon Yousufzai, spokesman for 201st Selab Military Corps, acknowledged Gen. Miller had assured them of future cooperation and assistance.
The U.S. President Donald Trump announced a withdrawal of 7,000 of the 14,000 American troops from Afghanistan over the next few months after his envoy for reconciliation in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad met with Taliban officials in the UAE.
In reaction to the announcement, Kabul has said that foreign troops stationed in the country were mostly engaged in training and assisting their Afghan counterparts and their withdrawal would have no impact on the security situation.
