U.S. Lawmakers Push for Sanctions on Pakistan’s Army Chief Amid Human Rights Concerns

AT Kabul: A new bill introduced in the U.S. Congress has sparked intense debate, calling for sanctions against General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan. The bill, presented by U.S. Representatives Joe Wilson (Republican) and Jimmy Panetta (Democrat) on March 24, accuses Munir of being involved in human rights violations and the suppression of political opposition, particularly targeting the imprisonment of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The proposed sanctions could include freezing Munir’s assets in the U.S. and imposing travel restrictions. The bill specifically highlights Munir’s role in what it describes as the unlawful detention of political opponents, suppression of protests, and restrictions on the media, especially against members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Khan.

While the bill has yet to be approved, its introduction has reignited concerns about the Pakistani military’s deep involvement in the country’s political affairs. U.S. lawmakers argue that such measures are necessary to hold accountable those responsible for undermining democratic processes and human rights in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s media outlets have reacted sharply to the proposed sanctions. Dawn, a prominent newspaper, described the bill as an “unprecedented intervention in Pakistan’s internal affairs,” warning that such actions could further strain U.S.-Pakistan relations and escalate internal tensions. The newspaper emphasized the military’s historical involvement in Pakistan’s politics, suggesting that while criticism of military interference is valid, sanctioning a senior military official might exacerbate the situation rather than foster reform.

The Nation, another Pakistani newspaper, framed the bill as part of “America’s imperialistic interference,” accusing the U.S. of double standards in its approach to democracy, given its close military ties with other regional allies.

If passed, the bill could have lasting consequences for Pakistan-U.S. relations, potentially reshaping diplomatic and military interactions between the two nations. The sanctions would also place increased scrutiny on Pakistan’s military leadership and could serve as a catalyst for broader political and human rights reforms in the region.
